Squidbits – Greekgeek’s Squidoo Blog Squidbits: Squidoo and SEO Tips

About

Kalmera! (Or is that Calimari?)

Welcome to Squidbits, a blog for Greekgeek’s Squidoo speculations, including how to Squidoo, search engine optimization, and web design resources. I’ll also be talking about what I’ve done with some of my better lenses, and what I’m doing to improve my less successful lenses. Hopefully other Squidoo members will be able to profit from the lessons I’ve learned – and from my mistakes!

About Me (ta-da!)

I’m a graduate student with a couple degrees in Greek and Latin studies under my belt, hence my online handle. Right now I’m in the throes of a dissertation on the non-semantic uses of language (what a mouthful). Many of you have insider’s knowledge on my topic, even if you don’t know the jargon. I’m exploring how the actual meaning of a word sometimes takes a back seat to its sound, symbolism, persuasive/psychological power, or, in the case of a lot of web 2.0 pages, keyword optimization. (The meaning still matters, but we’re employing words as tools for some other purpose, namely to catch search engines’ attention).

How I Came to Squidoo

I’ve been building webpages for fun or work since my first job with The Perseus Project in 1993. I like creating informative pages, sharing my interests, and writing tutorials to help others master the mysteries of the web.

Since spring 2007, I’ve been using Squidoo as a quirky publishing platform that helps me earn a little extra money for my content. I’ve had fun learning how to Squidoo, and enjoy sharing my tips and techniques with others. I’ve also gotten bitten by the theory and application of search engine optimization (SEO), writing content in a way that helps search engines and the people who use them find your webpages.

If you have no idea what Squidoo is, please see my provocatively-named Squidoo page, Is Squidoo a Scam? for a brief explanation.

Here, Have a Grain of Salt

Warning: I am not an SEO expert!  Please remember that this blog reports the experiences of someone who is still learning search engine optimization. I’ve got the basics down, and know some of the thorny disputes that the experts endlessly debate on their blogs, but I do not have the know-how or experience of industry professionals.

Um… ’Scuze Me. About SEO…?

Yes, yes, I know. The URL of this blog is NOT search engine optimized. I’m being stingy. Rather than purchasing a second account and/or parking another domain name, I’ve just partitioned off part of my personal website. If the blog really takes off, I may eventually establish it in its own domain.
